Pieces of pink

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a lovely week, though it was quite cold, wasn't it? We probably should expect that in February, but somehow it always feels like a slap in the face when I step out the door. We're expecting it to be 60 in the middle of next week, though, so it's like the weather has mood swings.

By now you know that February's color for the rainbow scrap challenge is pink. I love pink and have a whole bunch of it, in pieces, in scraps, in yardage-- and in unfinished projects. But before we get to that, you know I had to dive right in and make a block:

But wait, there's more! Yesterday I was able to finish putting this one together, too:

For those of you who are new here, I have one of these blocks that was made by my great grandmother and it's one of my prize possessions. The light makes both of these look a little wrinkly, but isn't the pink fun? Polka dots always look festive, and I just love the raspberry in the second block. I don't know that it's really a star, but it's close enough.

Now to those unfinished projects. . . if you recall, my plan is to make as many things as I can each month from the scrap bins in the hope of emptying those babies out. I have a project in progress that will use the pink scraps and is probably finishable this month. Here's where it is right now:

This is a crossed canoes quilt top that I started last summer. I cut a whole bunch of pieces and made a few blocks, then put it away for a while. I pulled it out this week, ripped apart the blocks I'd made so that I could distribute the patterns and such a little better, and then started stitching some more parts together. Then I stopped before I could cut more pieces so that I could use the bigger pieces for some blocks. When I'm done with those, I'll use up as much as I can of the scrappy pieces that are left. I only made a few of the orange parts for a little sparkle in the quilt, but I'll probably take them out at the end.

There's one more pink sort-of project that I'd be thrilled to tackle this month:

Not a great picture, but all of these parts are leftovers from the last time I tried to make a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt. I redid the final quilt layout in a much smaller fashion with many fewer pieces, and all of these were left.  They're all the same, triangles in a square, and there are dozens of them. Any good ideas out there?

That's all my pink progress so far! How is yours coming along? It's certainly fun to play with this happy color while it's nasty outside, isn't it?

Great start with the pink fun, Mari.

For your triangles in the square, why not pick up on the pink/orange idea and use orange centers to make stars. Sash or not for a fairly fast finish.

Maybe not white triangles in a square but pink legs of a star. Put around a square center, add corners and there you go! Fast star blocks, since you have the fussy part done already.

I was going to suggest Kathy's idea, those would make cool stars. Happy stitching this weekend. I like your analogy about moody weather. It certainly feels that way this winter.

Make star blocks and alternate with double 4 patch or double 9 patch to create a trail.

I like everyone’s idea of a Star block with all those BH leftovers. Did you see Project Quilting’s latest for 14.3? My post for today has a link. It might get you thinking! I might have made that Bonnie Hunter mystery, and it’s still a ufo! Good luck!

Love the canoe blocks Mari.
How about a girly, pink baby quilt. Maybe for Project Linus? That would use up your bits I would think.

So fun seeing all the pink in those lovely blocks. I don't know that I've seen your grandmother's block though. I have one solo block from my grandmother that I love as well, so I get it. Boy - the temps this week have been quite something, eh?

I love your crossed canoe blocks and think those pops of orange give it some punch. Your blocks are beautiful, as always, Mari. Wrinkles? What wrinkles? Lol. And I love Judy’s idea of the 54-40 or Fight block - one that is still on my bucket list for a quilt. At least it’s beginning to stay light longer in the evenings, so winter’s grip is beginning ever-so-slowly to lose its strength.

Pretty PINK scrappy blocks, Mari! I like your plan to use up all the bits and pieces. Good luck with that goal!!

I love that raspberry pink - such a pretty color! The crossed canoe blocks are going to make a fun quilt! Those triangle in a square blocks would be perfect for star points, like others have mentioned, too.

Love the raspberry pink! The crossed canoe is a fun one to play with. I like the other ideas for the triangle in a square blocks. I agree, mother nature sure is in a mood lately.

Pretty pink blocks! I, too, hope to use up as much scraps as possible every month. In between, I have to work on UFOs! :)

Lots of pretty pink!! I used the same units from the same BH mystery in 2 different little girl quilts instead of the original mystery. Still have the purple 4-patch units to make into something.

Both pink blocks are pretty and I'd leave those few orange pieces in the canoe blocks. Adds a little sizzle, in my opinion. Good job keeping those pinks moving out of the bins!

Well I would just line them all up and sew them together. You'd get rows of pink triangles and rows of white triangles. There's nothing like the punch of a two color one block quilt. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. You could make it a leader-ender thing. No work, no fuss, and no thinking!! What's not to love? Julie pointed out to me years ago that some of my best quilts came about when I wasn't thinking too hard. So go for it.

hugs,
Lynne

Your pinks are refreshing- I'm enjoying the more raspberry pinks right now. I saw those triangle in squares and immediately knew where they came from- took me three years to finish that quilt! I added an extra row and a large border and gave it to my sis-in-law. She loved it. The rest of the blocks are in my orphan drawer. I have no suggestions for you though, but I'll watch what others say.
