Classic Stitches BOM

Welcome to the Classic Stitches block of the month quilt!  This is a row quilt that I designed for myself to help use up my treasure trove of scraps, especially the batik scraps. I hope you’ll come along and join in!

Here is the quilt that came from this BOM:

The inspiration for this whole quilt!

RSC 15The quilt I’ve designed is a row quilt, with 11 rows, each 60 inches wide. The blocks are various sizes from 3 inches to 9 inches, though all of them can be made as 6 or 12 inch blocks. All of them are traditional, classic blocks that have been used by quilters for decades. Since this is one of my projects for Angela’s Rainbow Scrap Challenge for 2015, the color of the row for each month will be the RSC15 challenge color. (Be sure to hop on over to soscrappy for more on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. It’s fun and there is a lot of inspiration and a link-up every week. Angela is also offering a beautiful scrap sampler project all year. You should definitely go over!)

On the first Tuesday of each month, I will post a tutorial for that month’s block, with detailed directions for the  size block that I am using in my quilt. I’ll also provide cutting sizes for 6 and 12 inch blocks, and maybe some other sizes. It depends on the block, frankly, though each block will easily translate to both 6 and 12 inch options.

Some of the blocks for this quilt!

There are a lot of options for this BOM. Want to play along, but the quilt size is too big for you? Make 36 inch rows using only the 6 inch blocks. For example, six rows of six 6-inch blocks would make a 36-inch square quilt center, the perfect beginning for a baby quilt.

The quilt is too small for you? Make more blocks, or make larger blocks. For example, nine rows made up of eight 12-inch blocks would make a very generous 96 by 108 quilt center.

Don’t like the colors? Change them!

The blocks are too small or too big? Use a different size!

Don’t like a block? Skip it or use a different one. Really love one of the blocks? Make a whole quilt from it!

A row quilt doesn’t excite you? Make several of the 6-inch blocks every month or one or two of the 12-inch blocks for a sampler quilt.

The initial idea is mine, but whatever you make will be your quilt. Customize to your heart's content.

Materials needed:

This is a scrap quilt, so I am not using running yardage. Each month, you will need approximately 1/4 to 1/2 yard of scraps in the monthly color, along with 1/4 to 1/2 yard of a neutral. My neutrals are my white and white-on-white scraps. Yours can be anything you wish—white, tan, beige, black, or turquoise or magenta. Whatever you like!
My mountain of white scraps! I think they breed in there.

If you are using yardage, about 4 to 4 1/2 yards of a single neutral will probably be enough. (This is just a guess based on my experience with other quilts.) Each month’s color should take 1/4 to 1/2 yard. A lot depends on the sizes of the blocks you choose to make, so use your own experience to gauge your needs. Smaller ones will take less; larger ones will take more. If you are a beginner, get a little more than you think you need. Then you'll have scraps left over!

Borders:

I plan to have a small border for my quilt, about 3 inches all around, in order to emphasize the pieced blocks. Depending on the size of your blocks and quilt center and the border option you choose, you might need another yard and a half of fabric for a border. I really strongly urge you to wait until most of the quilt is finished before choosing a border. I always have a problem choosing scrap quilt borders and I’ve regretted an advance purchase more than once.

Thanks for coming along on this quilty adventure with me! Check back here the first Tuesday each month for a new block!

Dates:

New blocks will be posted on these dates:  January 6, February 3, March 3,  April 7, May 5, June 2, July 7, August 4, September 1, October 6, and November 3. December 1 I will show my completed quilt and border options.

This quilt is so pleasing to the eye. I am toying with making it next year. I wonder if I can cut it out and use it as my leader and ender for the month. I love puzzles.

What a beautiful quilt! And I'm just seeing it six years later. I know I have been to your blog before, perhaps you have rearranged things. Anyway, great idea! Thank you for sharing.
