Hi everyone! I hope you have had a good week. I am starting to see some leaf buds on our trees, and I am happy dancing like crazy over that. Soon there will be leaves! That means there will be shade over the balcony and the deck again, and at some point it might get warm enough to have breakfast outside again. Won't that be glorious?
If you have been following along, you'll know that I started the Stay at Home Round Robin, a project hosted by Quilting Gail and featuring several of my favorite bloggers. (waving wildly to Roseanne and Sue, Wendy, Anja, Emily, and Chris!) Astoundingly, I have finished the round robin quilt top! Take a look:
You know, I had my doubts, but I think I like it! The center block is a panel that I have had for a long time, and the final border is a coordinating print, which I cut lengthwise for the side borders. I had folded the receipt in with that yard of fabric, and it appears that I bought the panel and coordinating yard in 2008. Yeah, time to use them up.
In addition to the round robin challenge, I challenged myself to use up a specific set of scraps that I had saved that went pretty well with the center block. I used up a whole lot of them and only have a few squares left, which is a huge win in my book.
Because I only had small pieces left by the time I got to the end, I made the final pinwheel round as spinners instead of pinwheels made with hsts. I only had big enough pieces to make a few, but I think they work scattered in with the bird fabric. I also used up a ton of leftover 4-patches, and man am I happy to see those used up!
This quilt measures just about 60 by 70, which is perfect because I wanted a top big enough to donate. Because there is so much going on in this quilt, I'm thinking of just quilting it with straight lines across. Or do you think a serpentine stitch would look better? Or meandering? Now I'm confused. . .let me know what you think!
So yay me for finishing this, using up those scraps, and having something that I'll be able to donate, too. I feel very accomplished about this. Before I sign off for the weekend, I have to show you one more thing:
An entire herd of deer in a field near us where an old house was torn down! It was quite the majestic sight!
Hope you all have a great weekend! They're predicting rain for us, mixed with snow. I guess winter isn't done with us quite yet!

OMG look at that herd of deer - don't you just love seeing that. So nice to have breakfast on a shade covered deck - I love eating my breakfast on the porch in nice weather especially when nothing is awake around me and I'm just there in the peace and quite.
ReplyDeleteI think your center panel looks perfect in that quilt
OMG - that is fabulous! Each round makes perfect sense with the ones next to it. The center panel was such a good choice.
ReplyDeleteWe got about 3" of wet snow yesterday, and expect more on Saturday. I don't mind winter for the most part, but by March I'm ready for spring. Some years we see spring in March and other years it's late April. This might be one of those late years. SIGH!!!
Your RR quilt turned out so beautifully!!! Such a great way to make a quilt with what you have :-) And thanks for sharing the herd of deer, I love watching wildlife!
ReplyDeleteYay you for that pretty finished quilt top! I love the rounds that used the bright solids for the blocks and then that perfect print for the final border. Those are great pinwheels, too. That herd of deer is really something! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteHooray to be done! It turned out great! Must feel good to use up some blocks that were languishing! Fingers crossed for Spring in your neighborhood. Won’t be in Wyoming for several more weeks. Maybe boots and parkas won’t be required on Easter Sunday!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on finishing your beautiful SAHRR quilt top! I love the colors you used, and the center panel plus coordinating border fabric are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteHi Mari! Another great finish and what a happy one it is. I love how you worked in the spinners. The placement of the blue fabric in the surrounding borders really highlights and pulls out the bluebirds in the medallion. So nice! Someone will be so happy to receive your donation. Take care! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic finish to your SAHRR quilt top, Mari! It looks great, and how neat that you were able to use so many orphan pieces throughout the quilt. That herd of deer must really find something tasty in that area - what a fun thing to see! Thanks for sewing along with us for the SAHRR - waving back wildly!!
ReplyDeleteYou've hit a triple, completing SAHRR, using up some orphan blocks and an older panel, and making a chairty quilt. And that deer herd is bigger than any gathering I've ever seen in my yard. I'm in FL, so I'm missing all the yucky weather up north. Spring can't be far away now.

Your finish is most excellent! I think I would opt for straight-ish lines (not serpentine and not meandering). That deer herd reminds of the ones we used to see in northern MI when we were first married!
ReplyDelete🎶🎶 Wow! Where the deer but not the antelope play! 🎶🎵 Haha! I love your SAHRR quilt. It really turned out beautifully. I love the serpentine stitch for quilting so that would be my vote. Whatever you choose, it'll be gorgeous and brighten someone's day.
ReplyDeleteI bet you are feeling pretty good! You finished the challenge, used up scraps, used up that panel from 2008, and created a lovely charity quilt! Congratulations! You deserve to sit and enjoy the nature! :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous top! And great use of orphan blocks, these 4-patches look so good in the row. I love the border too, lovely bird fabric!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing and linking up!
What a wonderful finish. These quilts always look better when completed than what was expected. I wish I had the serpentine stitch. None of my machines have it. Have fun choosing how to quilt it.
ReplyDeleteLove the field of deer.
That is one fabulous finish! I love the that the outer border and center are related. You did just great with your pinwheels and used up fabric you had for a while and other pieces that worked, too. It will be well loved. Congrats on a successful SAHRR!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous.
ReplyDeleteMari this is so pretty! You held on to it for all these years because the right opportunity just hadn't arrived yet. Love the whole quilt. I vote for simple straight line quilting!
ReplyDeleteThe border on your SAHRR is absolutely perfect! It goes with the centre panel and ties the whole quilt together! You've done a marvellous job!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with the quilting!
Thank you for playing along with the SAHRR and for linking to the parade!
Your round robin turned out great! Congrats on another UFO finished.
ReplyDeleteYour round robin quilt just seems to sparkle! Beautiful work with that pretty panel as the center. Well done!
ReplyDeleteSlotting your Pinwheels into that print border really finished off your SAHRR nicely, Mari. Happy quilting!!
ReplyDeleteNot only your SAHRR top is a scrappy delight, it doesn't look like it was designed one round at a time. It is a completely coherent design. It just looks so together! I am thinking picnic in the park - scrappy quilts and pleasant temperatures :-)
ReplyDeleteI've had so much fun following the SAHRR (and wishing I had joined). The variety of quilts is wonderful. I really liked your panel and the border the minute I saw the photo. And it seems like your scrap collection was really meant for this quilt. I'm sure you've chosen a quilting plan by now, and it will be fabulous. The almost spring photos make me smile. Deer, not so much...they are a real menace in my neck of the woods, even though they are pretty.
ReplyDeleteLovely colours, your round robin turned out great. Personally I do like the serpentine stitch, not that I’ve done much quilting for quite a while. It’s good to use what we have and it’s much better for the environment too.
ReplyDeleteHow great does it feel to use fabric you've had for a long time?! This is beautiful! I absolutely love that center panel, and everything around it compliments it all so well. And double hooray for using up pieces you wanted to use up!
ReplyDeleteLove the colorfulness of your finished SAHRR. Even better you used up a few scraps and some older stash, definitely a win/win.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt! Congrats on using up your scraps and making it a donation quilt as well!
