Another quick H2H quilt

Hi everyone, and welcome back to the Hands2Help Comfort Quilt Challenge! If you look at the top of the blog, there is now a page with the Hands 2 Help information, plus links to all the posts (so far) for the Challenge. I'll keep updating it as we go so that all of our information is in an easy-to-find place.

Today I have another short tutorial for a fast donation quilt that turns out looking really good and would be suitable for a number of different organizations, depending on the colors you choose. This quilt would be a good opportunity to use up some charm squares that you've been collecting, too. Just like last time, this quilt uses two blocks, a 4-patch and a pinwheel.  Since we use these all the time, most of the pictures are unnecessary, but they make things more interesting.

And here is a mock-up of the finished quilt:

The quilt as shown finishes at just about 51 by 63-1/2 without any borders, and the blocks are all 9 inches finished. It's easy to add a row or two to make this bigger, or add a border or two to make it the size you'd like.

To make the quilt as shown, without borders, you'll need:

40 multicolored charm squares, or scraps to make 40 5 inch squares. If you want to use yardage in all one color, you'll need about 3/4 of a yard
1-1/2 yards white or neutral for the 4 patches and pinwheels
1-3/4 yards of a single color for the pinwheels and setting triangles (aqua in the mockup)

First, make the 4-patches:

Cut 40 multicolored 5-inch squares and 40 neutral squares. Arrange them into 4-patches and stitch:

Make 20 4-patches. These will be 9-1/2 inches to finish at 9 inches in the quilt.

Easy peasy! Next are the pinwheels:

Use any method to make 48 5-inch half-square triangles using the single color and neutral yardage. Arrange 4 of these into a pinwheel and stitch:

Make 12 pinwheels. These will be 9-1/2 inches to finish at 9 inches in the quilt.

If you are using the eight-at-a-time method, start with 10-3/4 inch squares. If you are making them 2-at-a-time (this is probably easiest), use 5-3/8 inch squares. Use your own judgment to oversize!

Last are the setting triangles:

These are much easier than you think! From your remaining single color yardage, cut 4 14-inch squares and cut them twice diagonally:

These are for the sides of the quilt. For the corners of the quilt, cut two squares 7-1/4 inches. Cut once diagonally for the four corners:

Put it all together:

Arrange the 4-patches and pinwheels as shown in the mockup layout, then fill in the sides with the setting triangles. Here is my progress so far:

Stitch into rows, and then join all the rows into a full top. Trim the edges of the quilt top 1/4 inch beyond the points now if you are adding borders, or after quilting if you are not.

That's it! Once again, I did not finish a whole top, but I'm working on it. I made mine in some happy colors, but it could also be made in some more sober colors and still look really good.

I hope you'll give the tutorial a try, and will stay tuned for easy tutorials from other bloggers as well. If you'd like to offer your own, remember that there will be a linkup for you to offer your own on March 27. I'll see you next week to talk about prizes, and the week after that the signups open, on March 20.

Have a good week, everyone, and thanks for stopping by!

Hi Mari! I love the pop and fun that the pinwheels add to this simple and quick quilt. The mockup colors are bright and happy, and the four patches are a great use of stash. It looks to me like you are having fun being a step-in volunteer for H2H this year. All of us and Sarah really appreciate all of your efforts. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
